Pitch N' Yaw is a balance toy based on the first flight of the Wright brothers in 1903 at Kitty Hawk, NC near the Bodie Island Lighthouse. Our industry partner, Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, prompted us to create an experience that excites people, and interests them in the stories of the park sites. Through spending time in the parks, conducting interviews, and studying National Park Service data I discovered an improvement could be made in the area of access to the park.
Access in this case means three things, their physical location, operating hours, and amount of reading necessary to engage with the material. To improve access to the parks' messages and address these areas I developed a balance toy that reflects the Bodie Island Lighthouse, the Wright brothers, and their 1903 flier to recreate the excitement and delicate balancing act that was their first flight, and many falls.
